PSC reminds residents of "Do Not Call" list changes
The Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC) is reminding residents that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has assumed responsibility for maintaining the list of telephone customers who do not want to receive calls from telemarketers. Under a bill passed by the 2007 Kentucky General Assembly, names already on the Kentucky do-not-call list were transferred last year to the FTC's national registry. With that change, Kentucky customers wishing to sign up for the do-not-call list in the future must do so by contacting the FTC, either online at www.donotcall.gov or by calling toll-free at (888) 382-1222, from the number they wish to register. A link to the FTC site is available on the Kentucky Office of Attorney General's do-not-call Web site, www.nocall.ky.gov. Complaints regarding possible violations of Kentucky or federal do-not-call statutes may be filed with the Kentucky Office of Attorney General (www.nocall.ky.gov or 866-877-7867) or the FTC (www.donotcall.gov or 888-382-1222). Attorney General Conway Issues Warning in Notario Scam Wednesday August 27, 2008 Attorney
General Jack Conway issued a warning today about a scam targeting immigrants in Kentucky. Investigators report that a man, claiming to be a "notario" or notary, has approached immigrants in two counties saying that he will assist them in obtaining their I-130’s or "green cards" in exchange for cash. Forty-nine-year-old Ronald M. Alvarez, has reportedly received several thousand dollars for services he never provides before he disappears. Alvarez has been indicted in Warren and Nelson counties on two counts of theft by deception of more than $300. Attorney General Conway Issues Alert to Commonwealth Credit Union Members August 7, 2008 Attorney General Jack Conway today issued a warning to Commonwealth Credit Union members who received a recorded message on Wednesday claiming that their credit cards had been suspended. "This is a scam," General Conway said. "Our investigators have received several complaints and confirmed with representatives from Commonwealth Credit Union that this is a hoax and may be an attempt to compromise members' accounts." The message asks people to call a phone number. When callers dial the toll-free number, they are then instructed to enter their credit-card numbers to reactivate the accounts. "Do not respond to this message," General Conway warned. "Commonwealth Credit Union has informed our investigators that it will never make calls to members asking for personal information." Members and non-members of Commonwealth Credit Union have reported receiving calls on their cell, work and home phones. FRANKFORT, KY (March 18, 2008) - The Kentucky Office of Homeland Security and the Kentucky Intelligence Fusion Center announce the resurgence of the EYE-ON-KY Tip Line. By calling 1-866-EYE-ON-KY, Kentuckians can anonymously report any suspicious criminal or terrorist activity they witness. The Tip Line is specifically aimed at averting threats to Kentucky's citizens, businesses, and critical infrastructure. Informational bulletins and posters will be distributed through the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security's Citizen Corps program, direct mailings to infrastructure owners and operators, and through the Kentucky Intelligence Fusion Center's Intelligence Liaison Officer program for distribution within their jurisdictions.
